American Coffee
The U.S. government had prepared a venue at the Department of State in Washington, DC to hold negotiations between the Arab and Israeli delegations. The delegates had arrived, the door to the negotiation room was open, but neither of the delegations wanted to enter the room first.
This impasse led to both delegations sitting down on the floor of the hallway, left and right of the door, without talking to each other. Exasperated American officials brought coffee to the delegations and urged them to resolve their protocol differences directly without the State Department’s involvement. After taking the first sips, both delegations complained about the poor quality of the typically weak American coffee, which did not compare to the quality and intensity of the Middle Eastern coffee they both were accustomed to. After finding common ground in their mutual distaste of American coffee, the tension was relieved, and both parties eventually entered the conference room together.
Amerikanischer Kaffee
Die US-amerikanische Regierung lud die arabische und die israelische Delegation ins Außenministerium in Washington, um dort weiter zu verhandeln. Die Tür zum Verhandlungssaal war geöffnet, aber keine der Delegationen wollte als erste den Saal betreten. Dieses Impasse führte dazu, dass sich die Delegationen links und rechts neben der Tür auf dem Boden niederließen, jedoch nicht miteinander redeten.
Die amerikanischen Beamten brachten den Delegationen Kaffee und forderten sie auf, ihre protokollarischen Differenzen untereinander zu lösen. Worauf beide Delegation sich über die miserable Qualität des typisch verwässerten amerikanischen Kaffees beschwerten, der keinesfalls an die Qualität und Intensität des gewohnten nahöstlichen Kaffees heranreichte.
Nachdem man darüber ins Gespräch gekommen und einer Meinung war löste sich die Spannung und beide Parteien betraten schließlich gemeinsam den Konferenzsaal.
